Eleven people have died after a gas leak in northern India.

The spill happened at an industrial estate in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, a member of Ludhiana’s Legislative Assembly, said at least nine people were taken to hospital.

She added that a team from the National Disaster Response Force and a team of experts had been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and source of the leak.

Populated areas have been cordoned off and residents have been evacuated.

“The incident happened near a dairy and a doctor’s office, but we cannot be sure where the leak started,” Ms Chhina told Reuters.

“The man who came to buy milk in the morning was unconscious outside.”

Three of the bodies “turned blue,” local resident Anjan Kumar said in a video posted by the ANI news agency on Twitter.

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik told Indian news agency Press Trust that the gas may have diffused from the manhole.

“We’re taking samples from the manhole. It’s likely that some chemical reacted with the methane in the manhole,” she said.

The state’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who said the leak came from a factory, tweeted: “All possible help is being provided.”
