(Bloomberg) – Germany’s Uniper SE is teaming up with Masdar, one of the Middle East’s largest renewable energy companies, to manufacture green hydrogen in the United Arab Emirates.
Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, executive director of Masdar Green Hydrogen, said in an interview that the two companies will build a plant that uses nearly 1.3 GW of solar power and is expected to start producing hydrogen from 2026.
Shareholders of Uniper agreed this week to a 33 billion euro ($35 billion) bailout that would lead to the utility’s nationalization and avoid its collapse as gas prices soared after Russia invaded Ukraine. The German government wants Uniper to step up its climate goals in the coming years.
Green hydrogen is seen as key to the global transition to clean energy. While still too expensive to compete with fossil fuels, it is widely predicted to develop into a mass market within the next decade. Green hydrogen, which burns without emitting planet-warming gases, is produced when water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy, usually wind or solar power.

“The project with Masdar in the UAE has garnered impressive public support,” a Uniper spokesman said. They declined to provide further details about the plans.
Germany hopes to eventually import large quantities of hydrogen to wean itself off coal and meet its 2045 net-zero emissions target. It is also trying to secure more supplies of liquefied natural gas from the Middle East to replace pipeline shipments from Russia.

Based in Abu Dhabi, Masdar can produce 20 gigawatts of clean energy today and hopes to increase that to 100 gigawatts by the end of the decade. This is roughly double the UK’s renewable energy capacity today.
Also by 2030, Masdar aims to produce up to 1 million tonnes per year of green hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel and green methanol.
About half of the company’s goals will be achieved in its home country. “The UAE is my number one priority,” Ramahy said.
In addition to its UAE projects, Masdar is working on hydrogen facility In Egypt, Morocco, Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.
