The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that following the start-up of Unit 3 of the Barakah nuclear power plant, its operations and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), has now safely and successfully connected the unit to the UAE’s transmission grid, from Barakah The third of the plant’s four units provides the first megawatt of carbon-free electricity.

Unit 3 will add another 1,400 megawatts of zero-carbon power capacity to the national grid, an important step in securing the UAE’s energy security and energy sustainability to combat climate change – two of the biggest challenges facing the world today.

With Units 1 and 2 already in commercial operation, producing clean electricity every minute of every day, and Unit 3 approaching commercial operation in the coming months – Barakah is accelerating the decarbonization of the power sector and becoming a A key component of the UAE’s grid Zero 2050 strategy.

The entire nuclear sector is an essential part of the UAE’s clean energy system with multiple low-carbon technologies, ensuring the reliability, efficiency and resilience of the UAE’s power grid for at least the next 60 years.

Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Enec, praised the milestone, saying: “Our leadership’s long-term vision and decisions more than 13 years ago are paying dividends today as we celebrate yet another proud milestone in the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy programme. time.”

“Connecting Unit 3 to the UAE transmission grid adds gigawatts of clean electricity to power all aspects of society, replaces the need to burn $4 billion worth of gas that can be diverted to export, and is clean energy certified , giving many companies a unique competitive advantage in the UAE,” said Al Hammadi.

According to Enec, once connected to the grid, Unit 3 will undergo a process of gradually increasing its power level, known as the Power Boost Test (PAT).

The process will be continuously monitored and tested until maximum power generation is achieved, while complying with all local regulatory requirements and the highest international safety, quality and security standards.

According to Enec, Barakah’s four units alone contribute 25% of the UAE’s national contribution to net zero and are the largest source of dispatchable clean electricity.

The plant demonstrates how to safely, successfully and competitively deliver nuclear energy projects in response to growing carbon emissions. Nuclear energy is helping to decarbonize some energy-intensive industries through the clean electricity generated by Barakah.arab trade news agency
