The connection between Bollywood and the Arab world is undeniable.add places like abu dhabi, movies like this RaceStarring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, and Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in 2015 Dirwell Filmed, the bond between the Gulf and its Indian cousin betrays a true love story.
It is therefore only right that Louvre Abu Dhabi should host an entire exhibition dedicated to the Indian film industry, focusing on the history, art and events that have created the world’s healthiest film industry – currently producing more than 1,500 films a year in India. About 20 languages, played all over the world.
From traditional shadow puppets and early silent films of the 19th century to the screen gods of the 21st century and, of course, King Khan, the exhibition showcases the richness of Indian image-making traditions and the influence of popular arts such as storytelling, dance and choreography. Drama and its close relationship with mythology and religion.
The exhibition will be free to Louvre Abu Dhabi ticket holders from 24 January to 4 June 2023 and is organized by the Duquet Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi Palace and French Museum, Bollywood Superstar Organization. Curated by Julien Rousseau, Head of Asian Collections at Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, and Hélène Kessous, anthropologist and South Asian film expert. The exhibit includes extensive loans, highlighting early storyteller props, shadow puppetry, photography, Mughal armor, daggers, mythological and religious lithographs.
The duo Kessous and Rousseau will also give a curated talk On the opening day of the exhibition, the theme was “Through the Historical Lens of Indian Cinema”. Along the way, they ask the audience questions such as “Ever seen a Bollywood film on canvas? Or just with your ears?” and promise to take us “back to the A time when people used handcrafted props to convey rich stories.”
Together they will discuss the living tradition of traveling storytellers, traditional dances, shadow puppetry and magic lanterns, taking you on a journey through time and space.
Artworks featured in the exhibition will come from Louvre Abu Dhabi, Branly Museum – Jacques Chirac, Army Museum, National Museum of Asian Art – Guimet, al-Sabah Collection, Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation and Priya Paul Collection collection.
