US accused former Taliban commander of killing US military | Court News

Haji Najibullah is facing new charges for the deaths of three American soldiers and Afghan translators in an attack by Taliban militants in 2008.

US prosecutors charged a former Taliban commander with terrorist crimes related to the 2008 killing of US troops in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan said on Thursday that Haji Najibullah was charged with 13 charges and the indictment has been opened in federal court.

Najibullah, 45, was charged with kidnapping an American journalist and two Afghan civilians in 2008 and has now been detained by the United States.

On Thursday, prosecutors said they had filed a replacement indictment, adding murder charges to his indictment.

They said that Najibullah was a Taliban commander in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, which borders the capital Kabul.

The prosecutor said that he was charged in connection with an attack on a US military convoy by Taliban militants under his command in June 2008, which carried automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenades and other explosives.

They said the attack killed three American soldiers and their Afghan interpreters.

“As reportedly, during one of the most dangerous periods of the conflict in Afghanistan, Haji Najibullah led a group of vicious Taliban insurgents who intimidated parts of Afghanistan and attacked U.S. forces,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Odai Said Audrey Strauss.A sort of statement.

“He will now be held accountable in American courts,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Mark J. Lesko also said.

Najibullah was arrested in October last year and extradited from Ukraine to the United States.

10 of the 13 charges facing Najibullah carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Najibullah pleaded not guilty in Manhattan Federal Court in November last year after his last indictment.

U.S. Army in late August fully Afghanistan withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in chaos 20 years later, and the country is now under the control of the Taliban.
