Washington, DC – Jameel Observatory Climate Resilience Early Warning Systems Network (Jameel Observatory – CREWSnet),Depend on MIT (MIT) and Community JameelSelected for Innovation Sprint 2023 Summit of Climate Agriculture Innovation Mission (AIM4C). AIM4C is a joint initiative of the United States and the United Arab Emirates to enhance climate action by accelerating innovation and investment in agriculture and food systems. AIM4C chose the innovation sprint to accelerate its impact following a competitive process that considered scientific excellence and financial support.
Jameel Observatory – CREWSnet, one of five MIT observatories Grand Climate Challenge Flagship Projectwhich aims to empower communities around the world, especially within the agricultural sector, by combining state-of-the-art climate and socioeconomic forecasting techniques with technological solutions that support community resilience, and through collaboration between the public and private sectors , adaptation to climate shocks, and civil society.
Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet will initially be piloted in Bangladesh and Sudan in collaboration with local partners BRACa leading international non-profit organization headquartered in Bangladesh, and Agricultural Research Corporation – Sudanthe main agricultural research institution of the Sudanese government, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Alleviation Action Lab (J-PAL), a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring policies are based on scientific evidence. Starting in southwestern Bangladesh, the Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet will integrate next-generation climate predictions, predictive analytics, new technologies and financial tools. In Sudan, the plan will emphasize the use of modern technologies to use better heat-tolerant seed varieties, increase the use of targeted fertilizers, strengthen soils through soil fertility mapping combined with data modeling, and emphasize vertical expansion of agriculture rather than traditional horizontal expansion. Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet activities and timelines will be reassessed as the team monitors the ongoing situation in Sudan.
Using insights into their local climate, communities will be able to proactively adapt to climate change by optimizing agricultural activity planning, targeting emerging economic opportunities, and proactively managing the risks posed by climate change. The Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet aims to bridge the gap between the climate change knowledge created by research institutions like MIT and the local farming communities that are adapting to the impacts of climate change. By effectively informing and engaging local communities, the project seeks to enable farmers to increase their agricultural productivity and income sustainably.

Jameel Observatory-CREWSnet launched at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh as part of Jameel Observatory, an international collaboration launched in 2021 focused on bringing together researchers and practitioners to use data and technology to help communities adapt to climate Changes and short-term impacts – long-term climate shocks.
The Jameel Observatory focuses on using data and evidence to prepare for and respond to environmental shocks and the impacts of climate change and variability that threaten human and environmental well-being. With a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries, the Jameel Observatory works at the interface of climate, natural disasters, agriculture and food systems, and health. It emphasizes the need to combine local and scientific knowledge to prepare for and respond to environmental shocks.
