A group of 27 Democratic members of Congress, led by California Congressman Jared Hoffman, wrote to Kerry calling on him to persuade the future host of the UN climate summit to withdraw the appointment of Sultan al-Jaber, the head of ADNOC. Responsible for guiding the next round of climate negotiations.

Lawmakers say the appointment jeopardizes climate talks, which they say are already negatively affected by the presence of fossil fuel lobbyists.

“It risks undermining the very essence of what is being worked to achieve,” they wrote to Kerry.

“Additionally, as some of us urge that a future COP should require any participating company to submit an audited corporate political impact statement disclosing climate-related lobbying, campaign contributions, and funding of trade associations and organizations active in energy and climate, ’ they added.
