Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with regional partners and thanked them for their assistance in evacuation from Afghanistan

The Pentagon said on Friday that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will travel to the Gulf countries on Sunday as a “thank you” trip to allies and troops who helped the US-led mass airlift from Afghanistan after the Taliban took over.

Austin plans to leave on Sunday to meet with district officials, U.S. service personnel and other government workers.

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement: “During his visit, the Austin Secretary of State will meet with regional partners and thank them for meeting with the United States as we evacuate Americans, Afghans and citizens of other countries from Afghanistan. Cooperation.”

The longest U.S. war ended in a hastily organized airlift, leaving thousands of Afghans allied with the United States behind, and a suicide bomb attack outside the Kabul airport, killing 13 U.S. troops and dozens of Afghans.

This is one of the largest airlifts in history, evacuating more than 120,000 Americans, Afghans and people of other nationalities.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Brinken stated that he would travel to Qatar on Sunday to meet with the country’s leaders and thank them for their help during the evacuation.
