US, UK seek UN human rights debate on China’s Xinjiang World News

[ad_1]

Countries including the United States and Britain have called for a debate at the United Nations Human Rights Council to discuss concerns over China’s treatment of Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang’s remote western region, diplomats said on Monday.

Some countries have been considering action at a council meeting in Geneva following the release of a highly anticipated UN report released last month, which ruled that “serious human rights violations have occurred” in Xinjiang that could amount to crimes against humanity .

China steadfastly denies any violations and has sent a government delegation to Geneva to refute what it claims is the wrong findings of the UN Human Rights Office, saying it is “ready to fight” if action is taken against it.

The so-called “draft decision” reviewed by Reuters seeks to be debated during the next session of the council, which begins in February.

The 47-member Security Council is deeply divided over the latest allegations against China, a member of the “P5” with a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and deep economic ties with many developing countries. The call for debate is seen as a less confrontational option than a resolution that could seek an investigation into allegations in Xinjiang.
