The life of Vernon Davis is a tale of two careers. Most people will recognize Davis from his days on the football field. Davis played for three different teams during his 14-year career. In an interview with Digital Trends, Davis talked about his life after football, why he loves acting, his readiness to play a serial killer, and his future in entertainment.

Digital Trends: You’ve played soccer most of your life, and now you’re transitioning into entertainment, especially acting. Many actors can point to the moment when they caught “acting wrong.” Can you point to that particular moment?
Vernon Davis: Yes. I think for me, that moment was when I took a class at the Sheldonian Theater of the Arts in downtown San Francisco. After that class is over. I fell in love with the world of acting and entertainment, so I started looking for opportunities.
Did you take that class while you were still playing?
Yes.
Athletes always talk about the moment they realized they couldn’t play a sport their whole life. Was that the moment you started taking the next step in your post-NFL career?
I really didn’t think about playing football for the rest of my life. I feel more connected to the things I want to do, the things I want, and the things I love. I always follow my heart and whatever brings me joy, I go after it, no matter what. So this is what I’m doing. That’s what I thought.
Do you miss playing football? Are you still itchy?
I don’t itch, but I miss playing. I miss my teammates. I miss the locker room. But what I do now gives me a lot of joy. It allows me to connect with unique people and explore the world of entertainment and the arts. I am looking for more information about myself every day.
Do you find any similarities between football and acting?
I think the similarity is in preparation. When it comes to game day, I’ll be the last person on the field to catch the ball, the first person in the conference room, and the last person to leave the facility. When you develop this formula of repetition and consistency, it allows you to go out and perform really well when you need to.
Just like acting, when you’re preparing for a character, you’re breaking down the script and using all the tools and techniques you’ve learned, so you’re ready before you’re on camera. You can do it. You can adjust. You can do anything because you’ve been there, you’ve seen it, you’ve imagined it, and you’re ready to go out and perform. Visualization is an important part of everything. In any competition, any job, any opportunity, I think visualization is key.
Most players transition to broadcasting or coaching after a game. Have you considered your role after the NFL?
Yeah, I did. I thought about it, and I actually auditioned for a few things. For broadcasting and as an analyst, I don’t feel like it’s something in my bones, something I really want to pursue, so I decided not to take that journey.

I auditioned for it. They are looking for an art lover. Someone can come in and use their expertise to help determine the originality of the show. That’s where I come in.

Those guys are great, man. I have no idea. They are good at what they do. They have been doing this for a long time. It’s one thing to be able to sit here and say it, but it’s another thing to actually get out there and do what you say you’re going to do. I can’t really say that because that’s not my field. The way they play, they use their body and their athleticism, but they’re also very strategic about what they do. They’ve been doing this for a long time, so I can’t just jump into that thing and say I’m going to win and make it. This comes with time.

Tell me a little about your role in the upcoming movie, Muti.
I play a serial killer. Morgan Freeman and Kohl Hauser, their characters, trying to figure out a way to stop me from killing everyone and trying to figure out what happened. I speak South African dialect because I am from South Africa. I make these laws all over the world. You’ll find me in Italy and New York City to keep doing what I’m doing. This is a work based on the true story of this tribe in South Africa harvesting body parts. That’s what this character, Randoku, is doing. I am mixing this mixture into this recipe called muti.
How did you come up with the idea of ​​playing a serial killer?
I watched some shows, movies and stuff like that. But most importantly, the preparation comes when you break down the script and compare and contrast yourself with the characters. You find your goal, you find your scenario goal, based on this character’s journey, what are you going to pursue? Can you find something relevant to your life to get you into the mindset so that I can trust myself to be this character and can I express it with my emotions in this movie?
For me, I use a lot of stuff that I have to deal with my mom. Her passing a year ago really helped me to be in that role because my purpose and mission are related to my mom. I had to achieve something to calm down and thank my mother for what happened to her. Basically, I created a scene where the people I grew up with, they sold my mom the drugs, killed my mom. To calm my mom down, I had to keep her happy by hunting down these people and killing them. I had to catch up with them so she could feel at ease, she could be at peace, and she knew I cared about her. Do you understand what I’m talking about?
That’s real life stuff. As a kid growing up, you see certain things, people around you, and see your mom battling drugs. You have this picture in your head, this feeling of not wanting this to happen. You want to save your mother. You don’t want these people doing this. They are bad guys, so I created this in real life. My mother died. These people killed her. I had to find a way to calm my mom’s heart.
It’s a funny serial killer who gave him this backstory to avenge his mother’s death.
If you think about the real life situation, a kid who grew up after a gang killed his family feels like he has to get revenge. Now, he’s killing everyone. As actors, we have to come up with these things. We have to create situations. We have to give the characters a backstory. I gave him a backstory. He grew up like me. His mother was on drugs. He grew up selling his mother’s drugs. That’s the story I gave the character. You create that backstory, you spend a lot of time on the character.
Another thing is being able to develop that character and come up with these different options. You spend so much time being this character. Whenever I wear this character’s clothes, Randoku, I become this character. You look in my face. You see it in my eyes. You feel it in my body. Everything about this character is someone I created. When I take off my clothes, I don’t like him anymore.
Was going up against Morgan Freeman intimidating at first? If so, how did you finally get over that feeling?
Because I’m so prepared as the character, when I walk on set, I’m that character. not me. Not Vernon anymore. More of that character. But when I think about it, I’m like “This is Morgan Freeman. I have to be on point. I have to be on my p and q. I have to really make sure I’m doing well. If not, Morgan Freeman won’t like it.”
This is a man with many titles. He’s all about doing great work. I can say he is the nicest person I have ever met. Working with him on set, he gave me tips and tools that I could use. He gave me something that I could use in our scene, which I thought was pretty cool.
Between football, shows and broadcasting, is there anything else we can expect?
For me, keep doing what I’m doing, creating these concepts and working with businesses. I have a cool company I just invested in called Jaxjox. They are really cool. I plan to do some production work with them for their videos. Maybe they’ll let me come up with some ideas to make these videos, like fitness workouts. Never seen anything like this.
You’re starring in a movie and starting production. Writing or directing next?
No, I don’t want to direct. I want to be good at what I’m doing, and that’s acting. I want to excel in production. I have a lot of projects going on. I have four films planned for the near future, between now and the next three years.I have [television] Showcase concept. I have different partners who have great concepts and I am working with them. We are going to develop these days.
Do you have any special characters you want to play?
I love playing tough characters like serial killers.i like the character i play Chariot, this weird, creepy guy. I like that kind of stuff. I love taking on challenging characters. I love that stuff, man. I like it. This requires a lot of focus, due diligence, learning, [and] Prepare. I love anything that is challenging and requires a lot of preparation. I’m all for it.
