Dubai police thwarted an international group’s attempt to smuggle more than 500 kilograms of cocaine. The street value of this illegal cargo was 500 million dirhams and was seized from the container during the operation code-named “Scorpion”.
The police said the operation was the largest seizure of drugs in the area. A suspect from a Middle Eastern country was arrested for acting as an intermediary for an international drug group in the UAE.
Brigadier General Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, Director of the Narcotics Administration, stated that the suspect was placed under round-the-clock surveillance after the police received information about smuggling large amounts of cocaine.
“An investigation team was immediately established to verify the safety alert. It monitored the suspect’s actions until he received the expected drug consignment.
“After the goods arrived, the suspect transported the illegal drugs to another emirate and stored them in a warehouse to promote and sell the drugs,” Brig. Hareb added.

How the suspect was arrested
Colonel Khalid bin Mowaiza, deputy director of the Narcotics Enforcement Administration, said the suspect had rented an SUV. He bought an angle grinder and other cutting tools to unload the container.
“At zero hour, our officials raided the warehouse, captured the man on the spot and seized the drugs,” Colonel Ben Mowaiza added.
The suspect has a criminal record in his country and confessed to the facts of the crime. He has been referred to the public prosecution agency for further legal action.
