In recent years, the UAE has seen a number of similar fire incidents involving the flammable cladding of high-rise buildings that are ubiquitous in the country.
On New Year’s Eve 2015, a fire broke out in an upscale hotel and residential complex near the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. About 15 people were injured in the fire and the evacuation. Dubai Police ultimately blamed the fire on exposed wires.
Regulations implemented after the fire required that all such cladding be replaced with flame retardant materials.
