Authorities announced that radars have been installed on school buses in Abu Dhabi to detect drivers who ignore the “stop” sign.
The Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with the Integrated Transportation Center and the UAE Transport Company-Abu Dhabi, said on Monday that they have activated the radar, which will automatically monitor drivers who violate the rules and do not stop when the school bus has a “stop” sign. . This is to ensure the safety of students.
The police pointed out that when the “stop” sign arm has been extinguished, the driver should stop at a distance of five meters from the school bus in two directions on the two-way road.
A recent online survey conducted by the police revealed that 17% of motorists in Abu Dhabi would not stop when displaying a “stop” sign for school buses to pick up and drop off passengers.
Authorities warned that drivers who ignore the “stop” signs on school buses will be fined 1,000 dirhams and 10 black spots will be recorded on their licenses.
The school bus driver must also display a “stop” sign on the school bus when picking up students.
The fine for not displaying the “stop” sign on the school bus is Dh500 and six black dots.
The bus driver only has to stop at a designated safe place. The police said: “School bus drivers should avoid stopping on major roads or bus stops specially designed for public buses.”
They must give students the opportunity to get on the bus and sit in their seats safely, and make sure they get off the bus when they arrive at the school.
The Abu Dhabi police announced in 2019 that they would install radar on all 7,000 school buses in the emirate.
The police had earlier reported that in the 2018-19 school year, as many as 3,664 motorists in Abu Dhabi were fined for ignoring school bus “stop” signs.
The authorities also recorded 126 violations of school bus drivers failing to display the “stop” sign when picking up students.
