Violence erupted in central Paris following a deadly shooting in the city’s Kurdish neighborhood on Friday. According to the BBC, some protesters overturned cars, set fires and threw objects at police, who responded with tear gas. This came after three people were killed in shootings at a Kurdish cultural center and a restaurant on Friday.
The suspect said he was a racist who hated foreigners, AFP reported, adding that the man carried out the attack with a “regularly used” pistol and was found with a box of at least 25 rounds and “Two or three” magazines with magazines.
The riots began after the shooting, when videos shared on social media showed people lighting fires and smashing car windows in the middle of the street.
The protest turned violent as hundreds of Kurds gathered peacefully in Republic Square to mourn the three victims of the shooting. Authorities said the suspect, a retired train driver, is still being questioned.
