Abu Dhabi: Bicycle and scooter riders who do not obey traffic rules in the emirate of Abu Dhabi may now be penalized as part of Abu Dhabi Police’s campaign to enhance road safety.
The strengthening of the regulations comes after a two-month awareness campaign on the rules and regulations governing the use of bicycles, scooters and e-scooters in the emirate.

During the campaign, representatives of the Abu Dhabi Police and the Municipal and Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), the emirate’s public transport regulator, distributed flyers and safety gear. The regulations are also displayed on public buses, bus stops and other public places and social media platforms.
Use an authorized vehicle
Brigadier General Mohammed Dhahi Al Himiri, Director of Traffic and Patrol, Abu Dhabi Police, stressed the importance of obeying traffic rules to ensure the safety of all road users. He also urged riders to only choose authorized vehicle types, which does not apply to electric scooters with fixed seats. In fact, only bicycles and scooters without seats – whether manual or electric – can be used on designated Abu Dhabi roads. In all cases, riders must not bring rear seat riders.
Riders must also reduce speed when passing through congested areas and must avoid driving in the opposite direction of traffic flow when using internal roads. For their own safety, they must also wear bicycle helmets and reflective jackets.
The transport authority had earlier announced a series of violations and the penalties that would apply, including fines ranging from Dh200 to Dh500.
Rider Safety Tips
• Make sure to wear a bicycle helmet and reflective jacket when riding a bicycle or scooter.
• Only use lanes dedicated to bicycles and scooters and avoid driving in the wrong direction.
• Do not drive faster than 20 kilometers per hour on the road.
• Avoid back seat riders, which can unbalance small vehicles.
• Do not carry heavy objects to maintain balance while riding.
• Avoid using noise-isolating headphones or binaural earpieces so you can focus on the road.
• Obey all applicable traffic rules and regulations.
