Cyclists in Dubai now have more to cover as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) opened a new tunnel specially designed for cyclists in the Meydan area on Tuesday.
The bicycle tunnel, which is 160 meters long and 6.6 meters wide, ensures free and uninterrupted movement along the Maidan cycle path and can accommodate around 800 bicycles per hour.
“The project is part of RTA’s efforts to transform Dubai into a bicycle-friendly city, which entails improving the infrastructure of cycle paths and connecting them with residential areas and popular attractions,” the RTA said in a statement.
“It also encourages sporting and recreational activities for residents and visitors, and provides cyclists with a safe riding experience that meets the highest safety requirements,” the RTA added.
Well-designed
The RTA noted that the design and construction of the cycleway tunnel was carefully planned to comply with the highest international standards, codes and technical guidelines.

The construction of the Meydan Tunnel is part of RTA’s Dubai Cycleways Masterplan, an overall strategy to develop and expand the cycleway network to connect key regions of the emirate. The ambitious plan aims to increase the total length of Dubai cycle lanes to an impressive 819 kilometers by the end of 2026.
