DUBAI: After a month on the International Space Station (ISS), Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi tweeted today a photo of him receiving the prestigious NASA Gold Astronaut Badge.
He shared two photos — a Gold Pin award ceremony, which sees NASA SpaceX Crew-6 Commander Stephen Bowen pinning the pin to Al Neyadi’s T-shirt with the Expedition-68 patch — and a Golden closeup pin.
He wrote in the post: “I am honored to represent my country, the United Arab Emirates, on this historic mission and to receive NASA’s Gold Astronaut Badge. A symbol of the promise made.”
The NASA badge represents the Astronaut Corps. Astronauts earn a silver badge after completing basic training, while they earn the prestigious gold badge for flying into space.
From the images, the Golden Pin ceremony appears to have taken place before Crew-6 became part of Expedition-6, which officially began last week after SpaceX Crew-5 launched the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft on Tuesday Enter the International Space Station.

Meanwhile, NASA said Al Neyadi began focusing his science activities this week on a “foam and emulsion” physics experiment that could lead to newer, more advanced space research and expand commercial opportunities in space.

The “Structure and Stability of Foams and Emulsions” investigation examined the properties and performance of foams and emulsions, including the use of particles of various shapes and surface roughnesses to stabilize these materials, NASA said. Microgravity allows the examination of the microstructure of foams and emulsions due to the elimination of the effects of gravity-related factors such as particle buoyancy.

After launching to the International Space Station on March 3, along with three other Crew-6 members, Al Neyadi has had a busy first month as part of the longest Arab space mission.
Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), which runs the UAE Astronaut Program, cites the key experiments and tasks accomplished by Al Neyadi as follows:
Deposit tomato samples for analysis, test drugs that could reverse negative effects of space environment on heart cells and tissue, participate in sleep studies, transfer supplies and hardware between USS and SpaceX CRS-27, conduct ‘Cardinal Heart’ 2.0′ experiments and working on a tank that recycles water aboard the International Space Station.
