Worshipers in the UAE marked the start of Ramadan in the country by offering the month’s first Taraweeh prayer.

The Islamic month lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on when the moon is seen. Since the moon was discovered today, Wednesday, March 22, Ramadan 1 is tomorrow, Thursday, March 23.

According to astronomical calculations, this year’s Ramadan will last for 29 days. The first day of Eid may be Friday, April 21, and residents will have a four-day weekend to mark the occasion.

Muslims observe fasting during the holy month, from dawn to sunset every day. In addition to the five obligatory prayers during Ramadan (Fajr, Dhuhur, Asr, Maghreb, Isha), many Muslims perform the optional Taraweeh prayer and Qyam prayer. The former takes place after the evening prayer ‘Isha’ and Qyam takes place before the ‘Fajr’ prayer and usually before the end of the Suhoor.

Taraweeh prayers are collective prayers. Therefore, they are opening under strict regulations during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, with most restrictions being lifted, many worshipers gathered to pray this year.
