Etihad Rail will continue track laying work in the emirate of Fujairah in the coming weeks, bringing it closer to completion of the mega project
The track linking Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah to the country’s rail network has been completed, it was announced on Wednesday.
The backbone of the UAE’s national rail network – starting in Guwafat on the Saudi Arabian border – will carry passengers across the mountains and through the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.
Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the national rail network, is currently gearing up to complete the construction of the Fujairah railroad in the coming weeks.
Authorities say the latest development is part of the final package for the second phase of the mega-project, bringing Etihad Rail closer to completing the entire network on time.
“This plays a key role in opening up new prospects for the logistics and transport industry, driving social development and providing promising economic opportunities in various sectors in the UAE and the region,” said engineer Khuloud Al Mazrouei, deputy project manager. Etihad Railway.
Some 3,250 workers spent 13 million hours over 25 months completing the tracks in the two emirates.
Here is a short video of the construction:
The 45-kilometer Sharjah line is part of the final package of the project, with a total length of 145 kilometers. This part of the orbit alone took 11.7 million hours of work. At Ras Al Khaimah, the line stretches over 5.7 kilometers.
“We sincerely thank the local government entities in the Emirate of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah for their vital support in making this project a reality,” said Al Mazrouei.
“We are also proud to see that this step furthers Etihad Rail’s success in developing strategic national projects, especially following our successive successes, recently adding rail to Abu Dhabi Industrial City Freight terminals and major railway lines.”
The final package for the second phase involved the construction of 54 bridges and 20 animal passages. It has 9 tunnels that stretch over 6.9 kilometers along the Al Hajar Mountains. It also includes the longest heavy cargo tunnel in the GCC, extending over 1.8 kilometers. The line traverses one of the most difficult geographic areas due to the surrounding mountainous terrain.
As Etihad Rail takes shape, residents of Dubai have begun to hear Train horns in the suburbswhich evokes a sense of nostalgia, especially in the morning.
A landmark agreement was also signed a few weeks ago to create a rail network that will Reduce travel time between UAE and Oman to 47 minutes.
