The UAE Vice President visited Emirates Crop One (ECO 1) – the world’s largest vertical farm which recently opened in Dubai.

During the tour, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was briefed on the innovative technologies powering the state-of-the-art hydroponic farms.

Sheikh Mohamed said this unique initiative reflects the country’s commitment to food security by promoting sustainable production systems and resilient agricultural practices. He said the UAE has maintained the highest level of food security by addressing this important issue through one of the most comprehensive programs in the world.

“The UAE will continue to make the right investments in technology and people to make food production and supply more flexible and sustainable,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

The $40 million facility is a joint venture between Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC), one of the world’s largest catering operators serving more than 100 airlines, and Crop One, a technology-driven indoor The industry leader in vertical farming. 330,000 square feet in size. The facility, which opened in July, is capable of producing more than 1,000,000 kilograms of high-quality leafy greens annually, while requiring 95% less water than conventional farming.

The farm currently grows spinach, kale, arugula and four types of lettuce, romaine, Ruby Sky, Lalique and Batavia.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid noted that the Emirates Group “has made a significant contribution to realizing the vision of the UAE as a leader in shaping the future of humanity”.

“The world’s largest vertical farm in Dubai embodies the UAE’s aim to provide solutions to the world’s greatest challenges and drive innovation to create a sustainable and prosperous tomorrow,” he said.

Located near Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai World Central, the hydroponic facility grows more than one million plants and can provide a daily output of 3,000kg at any given point. Leafy greens grown at the facility will be used to serve meals to passengers of Emirates and other airlines. Emiratis will be able to purchase products at Bustanica-branded stores.
