about a year after making her “Saturday Night Live” debutBrandi Carlile got the call to return to 30 Rock for the second time in her current album cycle.

Carlile’s presence as musical guest last night helped create a particularly good show alongside hosts Steve Martin and Martin Short promoting their show “Only Murders in the Building.” (Selena Gomez, their co-star on the Hulu mystery drama, also makes a cameo.)

Out of the blue, Carlile revisited the catalog of her first song of the night. While guests typically use the “SNL” spotlight to promote their current projects, Carlile chose her 2007 breakthrough “The Story,” which she’s already played “Right on Time” and ” Broken Horses”. Naturally, it didn’t disappoint.

In hard-rock renditions of oldies by Phil Hanseroth, Carlisle oscillates between raspy growls and clean raw pitch perfectionists, hammering out her vocals without accompaniment. Closing notes. Guitarist Tim Hanseroth opens with a Southern-glamor solo that melds with the band’s string quartet before veering to arena-rock heights.

The commercial for Carlile’s philanthropic wine brand, XOBC Cellars, maximizes the high-profile television presence, airing during the commercial that follows, at least here in Washington.

For their second track, Carlile took a more contemporary tune on “You and Me on the Rock,” the second single from “In These Silent Days,” which was announced at the Grammys in February. Album of the Year was awarded at the ceremony.Sweet Love earns Carlisle her three seven nominations This year, it’s behind Beyoncé (nine) and Kendrick Lamar (eight). The indie-pop duo Lucius was singing their parts live with stripped-down soft rockers, and Carlisle shuffled around the stage, wielding a heartrending falsetto.
