A school in the UAE has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest astronaut dress-up party.

Repton Abu Dhabi celebrated the UAE’s third anniversary since its landmark International Space Station (ISS) mission, with 940 students, teachers and staff from Years 2 to 7 participating in a record-breaking event on its campus.

The record was verified on-site by official Guinness World Records referees.

All spacesuits worn must meet the stringent standards set by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Students spent weeks designing their own helmets and wearing their respective country’s flags on their arms, highlighting the diverse Emirati community that the school’s students represent.

Steven Lupton, Head of Repton Abu Dhabi, said: “Today, we commemorate the landmark missions the UAE has carried out since embarking on an incredible journey to the International Space Station (ISS) three years ago. Instinct curiosity and a genuine love for learning about the wonders of the Milky Way keep a close eye on the UAE’s landmark achievements in space.”

Lupton added: “We are very excited to mark this moment with this exciting achievement validated by Guinness World Records. I would like to thank all the students, faculty and staff who made this record-breaking event possible.”

The previous record was achieved last April at the Nerve Centre – Our Place In Space (UK) in Derry, Londonderry, UK.

The students were equally excited to achieve this incredible feat, as it was the first attempt by students from Repton Abu Dhabi to hold a Guinness World Record.

Year 5 student Luca Hughes shared the experience, saying: “My favourite part of the prep was making the suit and helmet, we’ve been doing it for about a week. I love designing suits. Breaking a world record means a lot!”

Students noted that designing space suits and helmets was especially fun. They use lightweight fabrics to make space suits that meet prescribed standards, and helmets are mostly made of paper bags. Some of them even wore gloves.

Maris Borovac, a third-year student at the school, said: “I’m very excited about designing the helmet. We can do anything, like little stars, planets, or even a NASA logo; it’s all up to us! It’s a very creative process. As a team, we all help each other, so we’re all on the same page.”

Celine Turkiyeh, a fourth-year student at the school, added: “My favorite part was drawing the astronaut suit and adding every design we could think of. I started by doing the design so I could make it look great.”
