Afshin Esmaeil Ghaderzadeh has broken the record for the world’s shortest person (verified by Guinness World Records (GWR)) at 65.24cm tall and weighs only 6kg.
GWR officials presented Afshin with the certificate at an event held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Media City. “I am so happy and honored to receive this esteemed honor. It’s amazing. Wake up the next morning and you’re famous,” Afshin said.

The previous shortest person was Eduardo Nino Hernandez from Bogota, Colombia at 72.1 cm, verified on 29 February 2020.
Afshin was born in a remote village in Bukan County, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran, and his life was difficult. His parents knew about Afshin’s condition when he was two years old. “We were disturbed that he weighed only 700 grams at birth and that he was growing slowly,” said Afshin’s mother, Khatoon.

When the parents learned of the situation, they were devastated, “but we thank all the powerful people for giving them a son,” said Khatoon, who had to abort two fetuses due to complications.
“The doctor told us that it is a genetic disease. We have to visit Afshin regularly for checkups and monitor his daily life minute by minute,” the mother said.

Khatoon works on a fruit farm and her husband, Esmaeil, is a construction worker in their hometown. “We have to arrange working hours to take care of our children. When my wife is at work, I am with him. Sometimes, when I am not, she has to carry him,” Esmaeil said.
Since the shortest has to be watched 24/7, he cannot go to school and struggles with education. “Afshin was given special lessons by relatives and us and he spoke Kurdish and Persian,” Khatoon said.
Afshin is very popular in his hometown. “Everywhere I go, people appreciate me, and I’ve made a lot of friends in my neighborhood and everywhere I travel,” Afshin said.

Afshin loves to attract attention. “Many people even became famous on social media by taking pictures with me and tagging me,” said the record holder, whose friend recently gifted him a cell phone. “Using the phone for long periods of time is heavy, but I can still handle it and it allows me to connect better.”
Through the internet, Afshin tries to study and gain knowledge in his free time. “I know the tallest man in the world. I might fit in his palm,” jokes Afshin.
Global recognition may help him fulfill his dream of making his parents’ lives less stressful. “They sacrificed a lot for me. I want to make them happy and give them a better life,” concluded Afshin.
This football fan can’t stop talking about the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Despite being a die-hard Messi fan, he believes France will win. “My favorite players are Ronaldo, Aliday and Messi. From the way France played, it was clear they would lift the trophy,” he said.
