Driven by social media, millennials and brands seeking to deliver niche and bespoke experiences, this relatively new market entrant has drawn inspiration from other industry outlets to create a new multifaceted and bespoke stay.Case 1: brand new Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, occupying floors 18-33 in the iconic Capitalgate building.under hyatt hotel group family, this is the first Andaz The Middle East brand hotel is affectionately known as the “Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi”. In fact, it is a Guinness World Record-certified structure with a record-breaking 18° incline. At the same time, the decor of this Andaz hotel shows respect for Emirati heritage by honoring 4 pillars: Khatt (poetic Islamic calligraphy), Al Sadu (traditional woven fabrics), Mashrabiya (intricate/decorative tracery and latticework) and date palm pattern.
But perhaps the most intriguing aspect is the hotel’s thoughtfulness in commissioning award-winning Emirati fashion designers Esabola Create and produce personalized fashion items for every employee in the hotel. Walla is a couturier who dresses Who’s Who across the GCC region; more recently, he caught the eye of Lady Gaga, who walked the streets of New York in a quirky dress of his design.
Julia is known for her use of bright colors and captivating creative flair Gimadyeva (Director of Sales and Marketing, Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi) Explaining that having all employees wear Walla designs is something most people would only dream of.I’m thrilled that everyone is set free Show off their individuality and share their personal stories with guests instead of donning a cookie cutter outfit.
Andaz’s vision is to weave together the sights, sounds and smells surrounding each property to help guests foster a rich, immersive experience. The work of the Emirati designer sets the tone and positive first impression – this is the concept of staff bringing their best selves to guests and ultimately elevating it by providing a personalized, unscripted/non-boring service in an accessible environment their experience. While Walla is busy with a string of other high-profile projects, Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi is his first bespoke hotel project. Here, he created 216 different bespoke pieces for the property.
Essa Walla explains: “It’s a very unique concept and I’m very supportive of it. I worked with the Andaz family, and over the course of three months, I came up with something that was both trendy and respectful of our country’s traditions – and of course Variations on Essa Walla. I was given a lot of freedom and I mixed modern silhouettes with traditional arabesque patterns.” They were certainly different. The tailored look, fitted suits, gold embroidered graphics, drop-crotch trousers and a range of colors are not often found in the standard uniform. hHotel General ManagerStuart Deeson Adds, “You can shine your best and be your best self when you wear stylish and comfortable pieces like Walla’s designs. Everyone here is encouraged to mix and match and add accessories like statement shoes, necklaces or Scarves—this infuses our pieces with their own uniqueness.” But because they are ultimately uniforms, they must meet practical considerations of form and function, something Walla recognizes: “We use a proprietary high-tech fabric , which has tron/rayon and some elastane in it. It’s breathable and stretchy…these aspects are essential for staying comfortable in our hot climates (like greeting/entertaining guests on a hotel patio) and colder climates (air conditioned buildings) Very important.”
In this regard, Essa Walla, who founded her own brand ESSA in 1992, has always been a bit of a trailblazer. Walla is of Indian origin but was born and raised in the UAE, after completing an MBA in Marketing and Economics, Walla focused on one of his main passions – fashion and started working with local patternmakers/cutters and Tailor cooperation. “For me, my wish is to knit Traditional meets modern, relying on local materials and prints with universally flattering tailoring. Fashion history – the respect and reverence for it – helps inform my collections. “
