Emirates Emirates team has three victories in three stages of the Tour of Andalusia: After Tadej Pogacar’s double, it’s time for Tim Wellens to celebrate his first success with the Emirates team.
The Belgian won stage 3, Alcalà de Guadaira to Alcalà de los Gazules, a 161km run that was shortened by strong winds.
Wellens joined the main breakout of the day (21 cyclists in all), establishing a 5-foot-30 advantage, a gap that was enough for the attackers to reach the bottom of the last steep hill and fight for victory. With 1200 meters to go, the Belgian accelerated and none of his opponents could answer him: Pierre Latour (total energy) was second with 14 inches and Samuele Battistella (+15 inches) was third.
Pogacar led the peloton across the finish line and he kept the 48in yellow jersey on Santiago Buitrago (Barhain-Victorious).
‘A perfect day’
This is the 7th season of success for the Emirates team. Wellens said: “It’s a perfect day for me, a perfect week for the team, a winning streak, my first success as a driver for the Emirates team.
I was able to take the opportunity today and for that I am very grateful. It’s a perfect scenario and considering Tadej is leading the overall standings, it keeps me from pulling too much in the breakout, so it’s an easy day for me, the only concern is that the wind might get Danger.
In the end, we reached the bottom of the last mountain together, a climb I knew from previous years, so I could perform perfectly.”
