Wes Bentley thanks Robert Downey Jr. for saving him from drug addiction.
The “Yellowstone” actor revealed that he sought help with his heroin addiction after Robert went public with drugs.
Weiss told the New York Post’s Page Six column: “I was in the deepest pain of addiction, in the worst possible situation, near death, I guess, or in danger, and I saw him so bold, Being brave and opening it up saved me.
“So I thought if I did the same, I might be able to pass it on to other people.”
Weiss recalls how he began to abuse drugs after starring in the 1999 film “American Beauty” because he was unprepared for the trap of fame and fortune.
The 44-year-old star, who has been clean since 2009, said: “I’ve never had money before. So there are a lot of things I’m not ready for.
“I also know that as an actor, I’m not really ready to play good roles until I’m in my 30s and 40s. So I really don’t want it to happen too soon. I try to accept it and stick with it, but I’m not ready yet.”
Weiss recalls how a meeting with an ex-addict helped him completely detox.
He said: “I met someone sober who didn’t know I was struggling.
“He just talked about what a wonderful life he has now and how he looks out the window at the trees and I missed it. I think I want to come back.
“So that’s how it happened. So I just went to the meeting, and the 12-step meeting really helped me a lot. I already believed in God, so this kind of help — a higher power thing.
“I feel lucky that I got a second chance.”
