Protests have erupted across Paris after French President Emmanuel Macron sidestepped a vote in the National Assembly to raise the retirement age by two years. The French president brought in reforms that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64, proving to be important in saving France’s pension system from bankruptcy.

When the lower house of France’s parliament was scheduled to vote on the change, Emmanuel Macron invoked a constitutional provision allowing the measure to be pushed through without a parliamentary vote.

Some in Paris protested the government’s decision. At least 120 people were reportedly arrested in clashes with Paris police, with videos of the protest widely circulated on social media.

French broadcaster BFMTV released a compilation of videos filmed at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

Emmanuel Macron’s decision was also met with protests inside the French parliament, including some politicians singing the French national anthem while holding a plaque reading “No to 64 years”, Sky News reported.
