American dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster named “Gaslighting” its word of the year. By 2022, searches for the term on its site will increase by 1,740% compared to the previous year. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, gaslighting is psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, “causing the victim to question the validity of his thoughts, perceptions of reality, or memories, often resulting in confusion, loss of confidence, and Uncertainty about self-esteem, emotional or mental stability, and dependence on the perpetrator.”

It’s a heinous tool, often used by abusers in relationships, but also by politicians and other newsmakers.
Gaslighting can occur between romantic partners, within the wider family unit and among friends. It can also be a corporate strategy or a way to mislead the public.
“It’s a word that’s on the rise in the English language, especially in the past four years, and it’s actually It surprised me and many of us.”
“Every day of the year, the word is mentioned a lot,” Sokolowski added. He noted that “gaslighting” holds the word-of-the-year spot among the top 50 words looked up on Merriam-Webster’s site throughout 2022.

Merriam-Webster selects Word of the Year based solely on data. As further reported by the Associated Press, Sokolowski and his team culled the most frequently looked-up evergreen words to gauge which ones had seen a significant boost over the past year.
