Sally Wainwright’s BBC One series is set in Yorkshire with Sarah Lancashire and james norton – but where was it filmed?

The show’s name refers to the drug problem in the Calder Vale, West Yorkshire, where the storyline takes place.

Lancashire’s character, Catherine Cawood, is a police officer in the valley who, after the suicide of her daughter Becky, retires from her career as a detective so she can raise her grandson Ryan.

Becky took her own life after being raped by drug dealer and violent criminal Tommy Lee Royce (Norton), who kicked off the series with his release from prison in the first season, Catherine seeks revenge, justice, and protection for Ryan from his volatile father.

Siobhan Finneran also stars as Catherine’s sister Claire, a former heroin and alcoholic who lives with her.

Series creator Wainwright grew up in Sowerby Bridge, Calderdale, where he is a regular on the show.

Many of the Happy Valley storylines take place in Halifax, and the police often refer to detectives visiting them from Wakefield.

While the storyline is gritty and there are many grim situations set in dilapidated settings, the landscape offers a very different picture.

Fans of the show love the valley’s beautiful natural setting, which is at odds with the desperate crimes being committed.

Much of the series was actually filmed at Wainwright’s hometown of Sowerby Bridge rather than using doubles, with other scenes visiting Hebden Bridge, Huddersfield, Meltham and Keighley .

Catherine and Claire’s distinctive house is on Hebden Bridge, and the police station scenes were filmed in a disused old post office.

Residents of Halifax may recognize parts of the Harveys department store, while Allan’s crematorium has been mentioned several times, and Tommy Lee Royce’s mother in season two Locations for dramatic scenes at funerals have also been used.

Other Halifax locations included Boothtown and West View Park, while exterior shots from the Sowerby Bridge Police Station were also used.

Superfans who want to visit picturesque places can head to Mount Tabor, which is featured in some scenes where the characters drive through the countryside.

Happy Valley’s third season proved to be a hit after an eight-year hiatus, and one scene in particular stuck with viewers Call for Lancashire and Finns to win awards.

Catherine and Claire have a tense conversation in a Sheffield cafe about a huge plot twist for season three – no spoilers here.

The meeting actually took place at the Amico Cafe in Bolton, Greater Manchester, which TV star Jake Quickenden visited on an episode of ITV’s daytime show Lorraine to find out about its fame.

Owner John recounts how the café has attracted a slew of Happy Valley fans, including a woman who traveled all the way from London to sit at the same table as Catherine and Claire.

He added that they now have a Happy Valley sandwich on the menu in honor of Finneran’s line, which she said she “looked at at a mediocre sandwich,” a ciabatta roll with prosciutto, chicken and pesto, served with Salad and chips.

Happy Valley airs on BBC Radio 1 every Sunday evening at 9pm.
