[ad_1]

The White House dismissed Twitter Inc.’s emails about blocking news coverage ahead of the 2020 election as a “distraction” from the rise in hate speech on the site under new owner Elon Musk.

“Look at what’s going on, it’s frankly not healthy, it’s not going to help any American improve their life,” White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said Monday. “We think it’s an interesting coincidence that it’s a distraction.”

Musk on Friday touted what writer Matt Taibbi said was an email between executives in which they discussed the controversial decision to restrict access to a New York Post article in October 2020. article containing allegations against President Joe Biden’s son Hunter. The billionaire Twitter owner has accused the company’s former leadership team of being against free speech while claiming he supports it.

Jean-Pierre said the library was “full of old news,” noting that it came as the social network “faced a very real and very serious problem of rising anger, hatred and anti-Semitism on their platforms, and how they made it happen.”

According to the New York Times, researchers found that under Musk’s leadership, slurs against black Americans appeared more than twice as frequently on Twitter, and anti-Semitic posts increased by more than 61%.

Rapper Kanye West (now known as Ye) was suspended from Twitter last week after he posted an image of a swastika in Star of David. Musk said the tweet violated Twitter’s policy against inciting violence. Ye was allowed back on the site after his account was restricted in October for another anti-Semitic tweet.

Twitter, which no longer has a communications team, did not respond to a request sent to the general news email.
