The local government called a newlywed woman in China to ask if she was pregnant. When she shared the experience online, tens of thousands of others commented that they had experienced similar calls, Reuters reported. The post was subsequently deleted by the authorities.

A user named “Lost Shu Yushou” described the experience of a colleague who answered a call from the Nanjing city government’s women’s health service on Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, the report said.
The official told the woman that the government “hopes that newlyweds will be pregnant within a year, and their goal is to make quarterly calls.”

One person who posted in the comment section said she got married last August and was contacted twice by the local government since then.
“You’re married, why aren’t you ready to get pregnant? Hurry up and have a baby,” she said, the official told her.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at a party meeting last week that the country would formulate policies to increase the birth rate and improve its population development strategy. China has admitted that its population is on the verge of shrinking.
