Why Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram were down for 6 hours-News

[ad_1]

Facebook Inc attributed the error to “wrong configuration changes” There was a power outage on Monday for nearly six hours This prevented the company’s 3.5 billion users from accessing its social media and messaging services such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

The company did not specify who performed the configuration change and whether it was planned in a blog post late Monday.

Several Facebook employees who asked not to be named told Reuters earlier that they believed the outage was caused by an internal error in routing Internet traffic to their system.

Employees say the failure of internal communication tools and other resources that rely on the same network to work has exacerbated the error. Security experts say that inadvertent errors or sabotage by insiders are reasonable.

Facebook said in a blog: “At this time we want to make it clear that we believe that the root cause of this outage is an incorrect configuration change.”

The Facebook outage was the biggest outage in the history of the network monitoring organization Downdetector.

The blackout is the second blow to the social media giant in a few days The whistleblower blamed the company on Sunday Repeatedly put profits above suppression of hate speech and misinformation.

As the world flocked to competing apps such as Twitter and TikTok, Facebook’s stock price fell 4.9%, its biggest one-day drop since November last year, due to a broader sell-off in technology stocks on Monday. After the service was restored, the stock price rose about 0.5% in after-hours trading.

Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer wrote on Twitter: “I’m sorry for all the small and large businesses, families and individuals that rely on us,” he added, “it may take some time to reach 100%.”

“Facebook basically locks the key in the car,” Jonathan Zittrain, director of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, tweeted.

Twitter reported on Monday that the usage rate was higher than normal, which caused some problems when people access posts and direct messages.

In one of the most popular tweets of the day, video streaming company Netflix shared a meme from its new hit show “Squid Game” with the headline “When Instagram and Facebook are down”, and one of them is marked as The “Twitter” person raised a role on the edge and dropped the label “Everyone”.

In a Facebook advertising buyer group, a member ridiculed after replying to the service: “Many people today are searching for’how to serve Google ads for customers’.”

According to estimates by the advertising measurement company Standard Media Index, Facebook is the world’s largest online advertising seller after Google, losing approximately US$545,000 in US advertising revenue per hour during the power outage.

However, Internet companies’ past downtime has little long-term impact on their revenue growth.

Facebook’s services, including consumer applications such as Instagram, workplace tools and internal procedures sold to businesses, turned dark at noon Eastern Time (1600 GMT). The visit resumed at around 5:45 pm Eastern time.

Soon after the outage began, Facebook admitted that users had problems accessing its applications, but did not provide any details about the nature of the problem, nor did it say how many users were affected.

The error message on the Facebook page indicates an error in the Domain Name System (DNS), which allows web addresses to take users to their destinations. In July, cloud company Akamai Technologies Inc also experienced a similar failure, which caused multiple websites to be paralyzed.

On Sunday, Frances Haugen, a product manager on Facebook’s Citizen Misinformation Team, revealed that she was a whistleblower and that she provided documents in support of the recent Wall Street Journal investigation and last week’s US Senate hearing on Instagram’s harm to girls.

According to prepared testimony seen by Reuters, Hogan will urge the same Senate subcommittee to oversee the company on Tuesday, and she plans to compare it to a tobacco company that has denied that smoking is harmful to health for decades.
