Will Smith says he was “going through something” the night he attacked Chris Rock.
The “Liberated” actor has opened up about his “terrible night” after he took to the stage and punched the comedian after he made a joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith at this year’s Oscars.
Appearing on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” he said: “It was a horrible night, as you can imagine. You know, it had a lot of nuance and complexity. But at the end of the day , I just- I lost it, you know?
“I guess I’d say something, you never know what someone’s going through, you know? Right now in the audience, you’re sitting next to strangers, and somebody’s mother died last week. Someone’s kid is sick. Someone Just lost their kids. Jobs. Someone just found out their spouse was cheating.
“Like — all this stuff, they’re strangers, you just don’t know what’s going on with people. I was going through something that night. It doesn’t justify my actions at all.”
The 54-year-old star urged people to “be kind to each other”, while pointing out the way he has turned his own struggles into difficult events for “others”.
He added: “I guess the most painful thing for me is that I work hard and make other people feel bad. I understand the idea, they say hurting hurts hurting.”
Will brings up his own difficult childhood and describes his behavior in the moment as someone he doesn’t want to be.
He explained: “There were a lot of things. The little boy watched his father beat his mother. It all came out in that moment.
“I just — that’s not who I want to be… I’m gone. It was a pent-up anger for a long time. I understand the pain.”
He noticed that the incident affected his own family as well.
He recalled: “Like, my nephew is nine years old. He’s the sweetest little boy. He’s like — we’re going home, like, he’s staying up late to see his uncle Will, and we’re sitting on my He sat on my lap in the kitchen with the Oscar in his hand and he said, ‘Uncle Will, why did you hit that man?'”
