According to the Emirates Astronomical Society, winter in the UAE will start at 1:48 am local time on December 22 this year and last until March 20.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomical Society and member of the Arab Federation of Astronomy and Space Sciences, said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that winter will begin when the sun’s rays are vertical to the Tropic of Capricornus. This happens on December 21st and 22nd during the winter solstice each year.

“As winter approaches, the maximum inclination of the sun is towards the south,” Al Jarwan added. “In the Arabian Peninsula region, winter peaks during this period, especially between mid-December and mid-February. Minimum temperatures are below 15 degrees Celsius in coastal areas and below 10 degrees Celsius in deserts and mountains. Above 1,800 meters The temperature may drop to zero degrees Celsius. The area is also affected by cold air masses from time to time, which will further reduce the temperature.”

According to Al Jarwan, at the beginning of winter, the average temperature is a minimum of 12 degrees and a maximum of 25 degrees. By mid-February, expect to drop to 15 and 28 degrees. By the end of the season, temperatures will be back up again with lows of 18C and highs of 32C.

Strong northerly and nasher winds are expected from early January to late February. During this period, seas are expected to become restless, alternating between calm and rough at various times. Average rainfall is expected to exceed 80 mm. That would be 75 percent more than the total rainfall for the year. Various herbs and truffles are expected to grow on the slopes during this time.

Various constellations including Orion, Gemini and Taurus will appear in the night sky at various times of the season. The star Suhail will also appear on the southern horizon.

What is the winter solstice?

The winter solstice marks the moment when one half of the Earth is tilted farthest from the sun. It usually occurs on December 21st or 22nd, the exact same time around the world. The winter solstice is also known as the shortest day of the year because less sunlight reaches the earth.
