Both will have competition

Not surprisingly, both routes will compete head-to-head. From the week of 1 November, Wizz Air will oppose the 1 daily Etihad to Male flight, which will use the B787-9. This will be the second airline to fly to Kuwait, joining Etihad’s 2 daily flights (A320). Kuwait Airways itself no longer serves it.

Of course, in this case, “competition” is meaningless. Wizz Air will be the only low-cost alternative on both routes, but airlines won’t be competing to a great extent. As always, the addition of ULCC will be less about replacing airlines and more focused on growing passenger demand.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s two new routes will continue to meet point-to-point demand. By comparison, around 72% of Etihad’s Kuwaiti passengers transited through Abu Dhabi in 2019, and around 80% in Male’. Photo: Wizz Air.
