Every year on August 26, the United States celebrates Women’s Equality Day to honor American women’s constitutional right to vote. The day commemorates the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, which gave women an equal right to vote. The theme of this year’s Women’s Equality Day is “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.

“On Women’s Equality Day, we salute the movement for universal suffrage that led to the 19th Amendment, celebrate the advancement of women over the years, and reaffirm our commitment to advancing gender equality and protecting women’s rights,” the White House said in an Aug. 25 announcement.

It further added that “this commitment is more important than ever following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and remove women’s constitutional choice.” US President Joe Biden also called on “the American people to celebrate and continue Consolidate our nation’s progress on gender equality and defend and strengthen the right to vote.”

History of Women’s Equality Day:

The day was chosen as Women’s Equality Day after New York Congresswoman Bella Abzug introduced a resolution in 1973. In 1920, then-Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the proclamation giving American women the constitutional right to vote. The day was first celebrated in 1971 and established by Congress in 1973. Since then, every U.S. president has issued a statement to commemorate the day.
