Abu Dhabi has launched a mental health guide to raise awareness among parents about mental health concepts. The purpose is to help shape a healthy home environment.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Community Development (DCD) released its “Mental Health Guidelines for Parents” on Sunday to mark World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated on 10 October.
The launch is part of DCD’s ongoing efforts to deliver services and initiatives in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s social and health entities, which form the backbone of all segments of society.
Prepared by the Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development (DCD), the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority and the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, this guide provides parents with general information on coping with everyday stress and living a healthy and stable life.
It also sheds light on the importance of mental health and its impact on an individual or family’s behavior and feelings, and also highlights how it affects daily life and a person’s ability to deal with psychological stress. Factors that influence mental health are outlined in the guidelines, including relationships, lifestyle, personal and external factors.
Dr. Layla Al-Hayas, Executive Director, Community Development, Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, affirmed that “DCD is committed to developing initiatives that support mental health, such as the Mental Health Guidelines for Parents.”

She reiterated that the department is constantly developing and implementing initiatives to provide services that meet the needs of community members and provide them with the best tools to deal with mental stress.
“We have launched a parent’s guide aimed at different [mental health] All aspects of parenting while focusing on enabling them to cope effectively with the stresses of everyday life.This guide provides support [for] Deal with social circumstances and difficult situations,” Al-Hayas said.
“Through this guidance, we highlight our efforts to monitor, identify and respond to societal challenges and to provide care and high standards of service to community members. It further reflects our commitment to ensuring the well-being of the Abu Dhabi community and strengthening the UAE Status as an ideal living destination.”
This guide introduces parents to various ways to enhance their mental health, including improving all aspects of their daily lives by building and maintaining healthy relationships. It further addresses the need to enjoy and explore life, increase productivity and efficiency at work, enhance social contribution, cope with mental stress, change and uncertainty, and prevent mental and physical illness.
The guidelines also highlight various mental, physical and social needs that are important for improving mental health. It focuses on identifying support networks and understanding and utilizing coping strategies to reduce situations that can lead to mental stress. In addition, the guide teaches parents how to communicate their fears clearly with partners, friends, and mental health professionals, and to further embrace the fact that one can make mistakes and go through difficult situations in life. “
With this guide, the Ministry of Community Development demonstrates the role of relationships in mental health and explores ways to enhance relationships with life partners through enhanced communication.
It also reflects on parent-child relationships and their impact on the former’s mental health – as well as their relationships with colleagues, and the importance of maintaining that health through respect, effective communication, confidentiality, trust, self-protection. Awareness and boundaries.
