Other embassy staff were not injured, he said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba quickly ordered increased security at all Ukrainian embassies. He also asked Spain’s foreign minister to take urgent steps to investigate the attack.

“Whoever supports this bombing, they will not succeed in intimidating Ukrainian diplomats or stopping their daily efforts to strengthen Ukraine and counter Russian aggression,” Nikolenko said.

The ministry said the worker went to a health center without assistance. Spanish state television said he was later released.

State police told The Associated Press they received a call from the Ukrainian embassy at 1:20 p.m. that an employee caught fire while processing a letter.

The National Police deployed personnel to the embassy, established a cordon around the area and its TEDAX bomb squad was working on the scene in northeast Madrid.

Spanish state news agency EFE, citing unidentified police sources, said the letter contained homemade explosives and was addressed to the ambassador but was opened by a security guard in the embassy garden. (Associated Press)
