HALIFAX, March 20 (AP) — Police arrested a student suspected of stabbing two staff members at a high school in the Atlantic city of Halifax, Canada, on Monday, police said.

The two victims and the student were taken to hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries is not yet known. Halifax Regional Police confirmed that the suspect is a student at the school.

Lindsey Bunin, a spokeswoman for the Halifax Regional Education Center, said there were concerns about the student, who was in the administration office when the attack occurred.

The student then left the building, “but the police were there almost immediately,” she said.

Police said they responded to a weapons complaint around 9:20 a.m. and a suspect was taken into custody about 10 minutes later.

The school, which has about 1,700 students in grades 10 to 12, was briefly locked down before closing for the rest of the day and students released.

This kind of violence is rare in Canada, especially in the country’s Atlantic provinces.

Year 10 student Raghad Ghazal, 15, said she saw “a guy running away with a knife and then a security guard chasing him with a broom” outside.

That’s when the police showed up, she said.

“He was just chasing him and then five police cars came and they surrounded him,” she said as she waited for a bus outside the school. “I’m a little shocked.”

Hala Almashharawi, 15, was in the classroom when the stabbing happened.

“I didn’t expect something like this to happen at our school. It’s kind of crazy to think about it,” she said. (Associated Press)
