MEXICO CITY, May 15 (AP) 26 people were killed in a violent highway crash involving a van and a delivery truck in northern Mexico on Sunday, authorities said.

Prosecutors and police in the northern border state of Tamaulipas said the death toll was preliminary, apparently because of the sheer amount of wreckage and the fire that had destroyed vans and cargo trailers.

No taxi pulling a cargo trailer was found at the scene, suggesting the driver may have unhooked and fled.

The cause of the crash, which happened on a highway near the state capital Victoria, is under investigation, officials said.

Local media reported that many of those killed may have been extended family members returning from an outing, but authorities have not confirmed this.

Overcrowded vehicles linked to migrant smuggling have often been blamed for mass deaths in similar crashes in Mexico in the past. (Associated Press)
