The Baltic pipeline supplying natural gas from Norway to Poland finally opens, the Nord Stream pipeline leaks, and as talk of damage abounds, NASA conducts what could be the first test of Earth’s planetary defense. This and more are in Tuesday’s edition of World News.

Baltic Sea pipeline opens

The Baltic Pipeline gas pipeline was officially opened on Tuesday by officials from Poland, Denmark and Norway. The pipeline connects Poland to the Norwegian continental shelf, where Poland wants to buy most of its gas after terminating a contract with Russia.

North Stream pipeline leak

European officials are working to investigate possible energy sabotage. The leak of two Russian gas pipelines has raised suspicions as tensions rise over Moscow’s natural resource extortion.

European energy security

Europe has struggled to secure its energy sources in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in response to Moscow’s shutdown of energy supplies. One of the countries making the most progress in this regard is Poland, with projects including the Baltic Pipeline and the Świnoujście LNG terminal.
