New York [US]May 25 (ANI): Three Indian UN peacekeepers will be posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal for the greatest achievement in the line of duty in a solemn ceremony at UN Headquarters on Thursday. sacrifice.

The three Indians included Border Security Force personnel chief Shishupal Singh and Samwali Ram Vishnoi, who had served with the organization’s stabilization mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Shaber Taher Ali, who was employed in a civilian capacity by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq.

Shishupal Singh and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi are deployed in Butembo, Congo as part of a UN mission from June 2, 2022 – five people killed in anti-UN protests in the eastern city of Goma, near the conflict-torn country’s border. India has deployed more than 275,000 troops in more than 51 UN peacekeeping operations, including a large number of female peacekeepers.

The Medal is the highest honor awarded to UN peacekeepers who are recognized for their extraordinary courage, devotion to duty and sacrifice in the cause of peace.

The UN Secretary-General will host the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal and Military Gender Champion of the Year award ceremony in the General Assembly Hall.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his speech recognizing the extraordinary contribution of UN peacekeepers to international peace and security, said: “UN peacekeepers are at the heart of our commitment to a more peaceful world. For 75 years, they have Always supporting people and communities hit by conflict and upheaval around the world.”

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of UN peacekeeping operations. The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on 29 May provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of uniformed and civilian personnel to the work of the Organization and to commemorate the more than 4,200 peacekeepers who have served under the United Nations flag since 1948 personnel.
