The four were ordered without bail by Judge David Kelly on Wednesday, who said prosecutors had produced “substantial evidence” that the suspects were “participated in a very violent criminal spree”.

After the bail hearing, Preston’s mother, Dionne Mhoon, said she was “broken” and “full of anger, rage, asking why”.

It was not immediately clear whether they had attorneys who could comment on their behalf.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a statement praising police for swiftly apprehending the suspect responsible for the “heinous murder” in Preston.

“Their hard work has removed violent repeat offenders from our streets,” Lightfoot said.

Cook County prosecutors said Preston was on her way home from get off work on the city’s south side early Saturday when the suspect drove past her in a sedan and as she stood in front of her home, she He circled around and approached her.

Residential surveillance video showed the three getting out of the sedan and running towards Preston, who was still in uniform, before several muzzle flashes could be seen in the video as Preston fell to the ground, court documents show. Court documents say the attackers ran back to the sedan before a man returned to grab Preston’s gun.

Interim Sheriff Eric Carter said Preston’s death was a tragedy for the city.

Tyrone Pendarvis, a District 5 commander who served in Preston, said the officer was a rising star and her death affected everyone who knew her.

“She will really be missed,” he said.

According to department officials, Preston had only worked in the department for three years before he was killed. According to the Chicago Tribune, her death was considered a cause-of-service death, which entitles her family to receive financial assistance from the state. (Associated Press)
