Balochistan [Pakistan]Dec. 11 (ANI): At least six people were killed and 17 others were wounded after Afghan border forces opened fire on a civilian area in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

ISPR said Pakistani troops on the border responded appropriately but cautiously to the unprovoked aggression, but avoided targeting innocent civilians in the area.

According to ISPR, the Pakistani Border Force also approached the Afghan authorities in Kabul to stress the seriousness of the situation and demand stern action to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

Chaman District Police Officer (DPO) Abdullah Ali Kasi in Balochistan province said the shooting started after a mortar shell was fired into Pakistani territory. He also said that the injured, except four, had been transferred to the district hospital, where they were considered “seriously” injured and transferred to Quetta, Daun reported.

A state of emergency was imposed at Quetta Civic Hospital on the direction of Health Minister Saleh Mohammad Nasir.

Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo expressed concern over the incident. “I hope the federal government will ensure that this issue is dealt with immediately and effectively at the diplomatic level,” he said.

He ordered the Chamain district government to provide full support to those affected, Dawn newspaper reported.

The Pakistan-Afghan border, also known as the “Gate of Friendship”, was closed last month after a militant shot and killed a Pakistani soldier from the Afghan side. Citing official sources, Dawn newspaper said the incident injured two security personnel and prompted the two countries to close the border in Chaman, Balochistan.

Chaman’s Pakistan-Afghanistan border was closed indefinitely last month after an Afghan militant opened fire on Pakistani security personnel at the Friendship Gate, killing one soldier and injuring two.

After the incident, the two sides exchanged fire for more than an hour, and the trade between the two countries was interrupted, including the transit trade in Afghanistan.

On November 22, Pakistan reopened its border with Afghanistan a week later in Chaman. The decision to reopen the border was made at a meeting between Pakistani border authorities and Taliban officials, Dawn newspaper reported.

On 25 November, the Foreign Office (FO) said Pakistan was holding discussions to resolve the issue given the increase in cross-border attacks from Afghanistan. (Arnie)
