BOISE (USA), Jan. 8 (AP) — Seven people were taken to the hospital with various injuries after a roof collapsed on top of bathers at a hot spring in Idaho.
The ages of the injured ranged from 9 to 70 years old. All are conscious and in stable condition while receiving further medical attention after the collapse in Givens Hot Springs Saturday afternoon, the Owyhee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Witnesses said there were 15 to 20 people in the pool when pieces of wood started falling into the water, KTVB-7 reported.
“I saw the first piece of wood fall from the ceiling. I heard it snap and then the whole thing collapsed,” Lee Wilson said. “I was hit and knocked out and then I went underwater. A firefighter saved me, my nephew got me out. But it was horrific.”
Wilson suffered a concussion but was released Saturday, he said.
Nicole Caffrey said she took her 2-year-old daughter into the locker room and heard a collapse shortly thereafter.
“It really felt like the earthquake was right behind me,” Caffrey said.
The cause of the roof collapse at a private swimming pool 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Boise was not yet known. The sheriff’s statement said there was no snow in the area.
Its website said Sunday that the spa was closed “due to structural issues.”
On Sunday, the sheriff’s office left a phone message requesting an update on the collapse. (Associated Press)
