WORLD NEWS | A new dawn for rural women’s cricket in Punjab

Punjabi [India]May 20 (ANI): Even in far-flung areas like Dharoki village in Punjab, the Women’s Indian Premier League drew as many as 50 million viewers in its first week, sparking interest in women’s cricket in India, Khalsa Vox reported.

The first season of the Indian Women’s Super League will run from March 4 to March 26, 2023, with a total of 22 matches, all at the Braburn Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. During the first season, women get free tickets.

Despite the early difficulties, local legend from Punjab and captain of the India national team Harman Preet Kaur is inspiring a new generation of female cricketers and breaking gender stereotypes.

After seeing the potential in his daughter and the other women in Darokee, Punjabi police officer Gulab Singh Shergill turned his one-acre farm into a cricket batting range and coached 18 women, Khalsa Vox reported.

Shergill, a former farmer with cricket aspirations of his own, contributed to the training of the girls with his wages and farming profits. Seven of his pupils have been selected for the region’s under-15 teams. The girls’ achievements and Shergill’s commitment are being recognized by Dharoki and boosting the growth of women’s cricket in India.

Women’s cricket has gained popularity in India since the women’s cricket team reached the final of the 2017 ODI World Cup and lost to England. (Arnie)
