Washington [US]Aug. 22 (ANI): Top U.S. doctor Anthony Fauci said on Monday that he will step down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden in December this year.
“While I am moving forward from my current position, I am not retiring,” Fauci said in a statement quoted by NBC News.

“After more than 50 years of government service, I plan to pursue the next phase of my career while still having the energy and enthusiasm for my field,” the statement read further.
In July, Fauci said he planned to retire before the end of President Joe Biden’s current term, which ends in January 2025.

“By the end of Biden’s first term, I will likely[retire],” Fauci said, according to CNN.
Fauci, who also served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades, has said that he currently has no specific retirement date and has not begun a retirement process.
The White House’s top medical adviser said he feels he has a good system in place at NIAID to facilitate a smooth transition at the agency and hopes to pursue other career opportunities after he eventually leaves, CNN reported.
“In my institute, every influencer is picked by me. So that’s something I’ve been working on for four years now. So, we have a great system,” he said.
“Obviously, you can’t go on forever. I do want to do other things in my career, even though I’m at a fairly advanced age. I have the energy and enthusiasm to continue pursuing other aspects of my career, and I’ll do it for a while Time to do it. I’m not sure when, but I don’t think I’m in this job where I can’t do anything else after that,” Fauci added.
