World News | Argentina reiterates support for India’s upcoming G20 presidency

New Delhi [India]27th August (ANI): Argentina has affirmed its support for India’s upcoming G20 presidency, including further advancement of the Global South’s development agenda in the G20, according to a joint statement issued by New Delhi and Buenos Aires.

The statement came after Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Argentina’s Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiro chaired a Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) on Friday.

Notably, India will assume the G20 presidency in September 2023.

The two ministers expressed satisfaction with the close cooperation between the two countries in multilateral forums and agreed to work closely with the United Nations and other multilateral organizations to address terrorism, security, international and regional peace, climate change, biodiversity loss, fair trade and sustainable develop.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to international cooperation to address global environmental challenges, and called on developed countries and multilateral financial institutions to increase financial support, capacity building and technology transfer to developing countries.

“They reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and stressed the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council, including an expansion of the Council to make it more representative, accountable, effective and reflective of the contemporary realities of the 21st century. As Members of the United Nations Group of 77, who have agreed to continue to work together in multilateral forums to advance the interests of developing countries and promote South-South cooperation,” the statement read.

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to the goals of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. India congratulated Argentina on its presidency for the period 2022-2023, and Argentina expressed its strong support for India’s membership in the group.

As terrorism and extremism continue to pose threats to regional and global peace, the two countries reaffirmed their determination to address this grave challenge to humanity and the need to continue to comprehensively address terrorism within an international framework.

Both ministers noted recent discussions between India and Mercosur to expand existing preferential trade agreements and stressed their shared commitment to further promoting mutually beneficial trade.

“Acknowledging the strength of the pharmaceutical industries of both countries, the two ministers agreed to promote trade and investment in pharmaceuticals. EAM asked to explore the possibility of including India in the list of countries in Annex I of Argentina’s Decree No. 150 of January 20, 1990,” according to the statement.

Argentina also detailed the roadmap for the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) during its interim presidency in 2022, and stressed the importance of dialogue with other countries and regional groups, including India.

India reiterated its support for the resumption of negotiations to resolve sovereignty issues related to the Malvinas Islands in accordance with the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization.

The two ministers agreed to hold the next round of joint committee meetings in India in 2023 at a mutually convenient date.

The foreign minister will pay an official visit to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina from 22 to 27 August. (ANI)
