WASHINGTON, May 11 (PTI) Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said Asian-American turnout brought real strength to the community as they stood up for US President Jobi in Georgia. Deng and Senator Raphael Warnock brought victory.

Jayapal, 57, a member of the Democratic Party, is the first South Asian-American woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

She is one of only 20 naturalized citizens to serve in the House of Representatives and one of fewer than 100 women of color to serve in the U.S. Congress.

More Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) voter turnout than any other population in Georgia is a big win for Warnock, she said, just as AANHPI voters did for Biden. The same victory that Deng brought.

“The rise in turnout in Georgia is proof that the political power we’ve built in this room is real, it’s durable, it has staying power. We have incredible leaders today, but we will have them at every level More incredible leaders at AANHPI,” she said.

“We know that having these perspectives is important not only for policy, but also for how people see their future,” Jayapal said Wednesday at the AANHPI Women’s Celebration organized by the AAPI Victory Fund at the Kennedy Center.

She said that what gives her the most hope and inspiration is seeing all the incredible young people who power this movement.

Jayapal said having diverse voices and positions of power is really critical to building a democracy that meets people’s real needs.

“This is critical to implementing the necessary and urgent policies we need in this country. We all know what is at stake. We all know what the challenges are. We know our democracy is fragile and it requires our work and Our participation keeps it robust,” she said.

“We know that the former occupant of the White House is running for president again despite instigating an insurrection. We know that Republicans, controlled by extreme MAGA, now control the House of Representatives,” Jayapal said.

She highlighted the commitment of Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris administration to work with the AA and NHPI communities to build a freer and fairer America.

“I’m here to represent President Biden’s Cabinet as the first Asian American and first woman of color to be confirmed as USTR. But I also represent all of us in the President’s Cabinet — Asian American American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities,” said U.S. Trade Representative Kathleen Tay.

“The Vice President of the United States gets us because she is one of us. We should also celebrate other women leaders, some of whom are here tonight.” Arati Prabhakar, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, who is with me in the President’s Cabinet.
