kabul [Afghanistan]April 24 (ANI): At least 120 Afghan citizens are trapped in the conflict in Sudan, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister under the Taliban caretaker regime, has revealed, Khaama Press reported.
Muttaqi announced at a conference in Khost province that the authorities wanted to protect and aid the citizens trapped in Sudan’s war-torn region.
As fighting intensified in Khartoum between two rival groups of the Sudanese army, many countries decided to expel their own people and diplomats.
Clashes in Sudan involving the Sudanese army and “Rapid Forces” began on April 15 in the country’s capital, Khartoum, and have since expanded to other areas. According to the latest figures, more than 400 people have died as a result of the increased violence, Khaama Press reported.
Muttaqi’s comments about Afghan citizens trapped in Sudan come amid a political, economic and humanitarian crisis. However, he did not elaborate on how to protect and rescue the 120 trapped citizens.
Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have evacuated their citizens from Sudan, and others are in the process of doing so.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says 413 people have died in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, while the UN children’s agency says children are paying a high price, with at least nine reported killed and more than 50 seriously injured in fighting, Turkish News Anadolu Agency reported.
WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a U.N. news briefing that 413 people were killed and 3,551 wounded in the clashes, according to Sudanese government figures.
The fighting is part of an ongoing conflict between the country’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
She said there have been 11 verified attacks on healthcare facilities, 10 of which have occurred since April 15. (ANI)
